Bell Gardens : Curbs on Vendors Sought
The City Council has introduced an ordinance to more tightly regulate street vendors.
The ordinance is aimed mainly at those vendors with sidewalk pushcarts, Assistant City Manager Maria Aguirre said.
She said a few residents complained to the council after some vendors began to sell “strange” items to kids, such as grab bags with stickers that had off-color slogans.
Selling wares from a pushcart or any vehicle other than a motor vehicle will be prohibited under the ordinance. Also, a street vendor selling from a motor vehicle would only be able to sell food, and only after getting a business permit.
If the ordinance, introduced Monday, passes a second reading, scheduled for March 10, it will go into effect 30 days later. Similar ordinances have been passed in Lynwood and Maywood.
