CSUN Swimmer Wins Appeal

Sandy Barnes of Cal State Northridge, who thought she had met the standard in the water last Friday, qualified on dry land this week for the NCAA Division II swimming championships.

Barnes will be allowed to compete in the 100-yard butterfly at the national meet March 12-15 in Orlando, Fla., after the NCAA agreed that the electronic timing system used at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships last week at Cal State Bakersfield was hooked up improperly.

CCAA officials had appealed to the NCAA after discovering last Saturday that the Bakersfield pool was mistakenly hooked up to a backup timing system, which records times that are .15 of a second slower than those recorded by the primary system.

The NCAA has told the conference that it can subtract .15 of a second from the marks posted before the mistake was discovered prior to Saturday’s finals.

Cal Lutheran Coach Plans One-Year Leave

Cal Lutheran basketball coach Ed Anderson will take a one-year leave of absence, but will return to coach the Kingsmen in 1987-88.

Anderson, 53, said he would spend the year doing fund-raising for the basketball program, which needs money for scholarships and new playing facilities.

Larry Lopez, who has been Anderson’s assistant coach the last two seasons, will coach the team next season.

Anderson’s career record at Cal Lutheran is 27-64.

AYSO Playoffs Begin Saturday

Sectional playoffs in the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) will be held Saturday and Sunday at Conejo Creek Fields in Thousand Oaks.

The six areas participating are the East San Fernando Valley, West San Fernando Valley, Ventura County / Santa Barbara, Bakersfield / Kern County, San Luis Obispo and Fresno.
