NHL Roundup : Five-Goal Outburst Helps Flames Defeat Flyers, 7-4

Joey Mullen scored a goal and added two assists, and the Calgary Flames surprised the Philadelphia Flyers, 7-4, Thursday night at Calgary.

The Flames, winners of four of their last five games, scored five goals in the middle period although they were outshot, 17-8. Calgary built a 6-1 lead after two periods by scoring three times on power plays.

Flame goalie Rejean Lemelin stopped 36 shots, allowing goals to Mark Howe, Doug Crossman, Ron Sutter and Brian Propp.

Washington 2, Boston 1--Bob Carpenter scored from the slot at 7:36 of the third period to give the Capitals the victory at Boston.

Goalie Pete Peeters, traded by Boston to Washington Nov. 14, stopped 33 shots.

The Bruins lost a fourth straight game at Boston Garden, where they’ve lost seven all season.

Mike Gartner’s 31st goal of the season at 7:28 of the second period brought the Capitals even after Ray Bourque put Boston ahead at 1:20 of the period.

N.Y. Rangers 8, Pittsburgh 3--Rookie Mike Ridley scored two goals as the Rangers trounced the Penguins at New York.

Reijo Ruotsalainen added four assists for New York, which has won seven of eight games to move within three points of Pittsburgh in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Patrick Division.

Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux assisted on two goals and extended his scoring streak to 21 games, currently the longest in the NHL.
