Pacific 10 Roundup : Arizona Is Alone at the Top After Routing Washington
Sean Elliott scored 19 points, and Steve Kerr added 18 to lead Arizona into sole possession of first place in the Pacific 10 Conference with a 77-56 rout of Washington Thursday night at Tucson.
The Wildcats (21-7 overall, 12-3 in the conference) gained a full game on the Huskies (17-10, 11-4) with three games remaining.
Kerr scored 10 points in the first half as Arizona took a 31-17 lead.
Arizona’s matchup zone defense held Washington’s leading scorer, Chris Welp, to five points in the first half and 13 for the game. The 7-footer averages 19.5.
Elliott scored 11 points in the first 3:51 of the second half to give Arizona a 21-point lead. The Huskies came no closer than 13 thereafter.
Al Moscatel came off the bench to lead the Huskies with 14 points.
Arizona State 80, Washington State 78--Steve Beck scored 4 of his 27 points in the second overtime period as the Sun Devils (13-13, 7-9) won at Tempe, Ariz.
Washington State (13-15, 6-9) was led by Joe Wallace with 19 points.
California 64, Oregon 55--Kevin Johnson scored 20 points, and Chris Washington added 17 as the Bears (17-8, 9-6) retained sole possession of third place with a victory over the Ducks (9-17, 4-12) at Berkeley.
Oregon State 74, Stanford 60--Tyrone Miller and Darrin Houston each scored 18 points to lead the Beavers (12-11, 8-7) past the Cardinal (13-14, 7-8) at Stanford.
