Despite 3 Records, UCI Women Are 6th

UC Irvine set three school records Friday night but fell into last place after two days of the three-day PCAA women’s swimming championships at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

The three records Friday brought UCI’s total to eight for the meet. Nevertheless, the Anteaters are sixth with 123 points. Hawaii leads with 400.5, and is followed by UC Santa Barbara with 320, UNLV with 287 1/2, Cal State Long Beach with 267 and Pacific with 153.

Lee McKinney was 10th in the 400-individual medley for UCI with a time of 4:38.23 and Jennifer Luhn took 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.62. The Anteaters’ 200 relay team set the third record with a time of 1:40.05.

In men’s community college swimming:

Saddleback 75, Mt. San Antonio 25--The Gauchos’ Kim Dellota qualified for the state meet in the 1,000 free (9:36.56) and teammate Rhett Chee Ping qualified in the 50 free (22.26).

Orange Coast 61, Rancho Santiago 43--Carl Stewart qualified for the state meet in the 100 backstroke (57.23) and 200 backstroke (2:06.00) for the Pirates. OCC’s Jeff Young also qualified in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.3).

In women’s community college swimming:

Saddleback 84, Mt. San Antonio 41--Kari Irvin qualified for the Gauchos in the 100 free (57.11) and 200 free (2:03.96). She qualified in the 100 butterfly and 50 free last week.

Cypress 78, Cerritos 52--Tracy Paxton and Andrea Bennett each won three individual events and were on the winning 200 medley relay team for the Chargers.

Orange Coast 106, Rancho Santiago 21--Five swimmers qualified for the defending state champion Pirates. Cheri Carpenter led the way by qualifying in the 100 individual medley (1:04.9), 100 free (55.4) and 50 butterfly (28.7).
