Hands Across America, the coast-to-coast human link of hands scheduled for May 25, has received bipartisan support from the 16 governors whose states lie along the proposed route from New York to California, according to an announcement from the organization.
The governors have agreed to assign a staff aide to coordinate with event officials, brief state police and inform government employees and schools. “On that day there will be no politics, no divisions, no disagreeements--just an outpouring of the American spirit,” said Gov. Tom Kean of New Jersey and Gov. Bruce Babbitt of Arizona in the prepared statement.
The states whose governors have pledged support are New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maine, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, and California.
