All four members of a Highland family died Saturday when the husband and father swerved to avoid a left-turning vehicle, lost control of his car and slid under an oncoming cement truck, the California Highway Patrol said.

Richard F. Speicher, 29, his wife, Michele 28, and their 3-year old daughter, Alysia Marie, were killed instantly and a son, Jared Paul, 1 1/2, died at a San Bernardino area hospital. All were wearing seat belts or were in safety seats, the CHP said Sunday. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The ready-mix truck’s weight was centered on top of the Speicher car’s passenger compartment and it took firefighters 90 minutes to free the victims, authorities said. The front of the car remained untouched in the crash on Alabama Street in Highland, near San Bernardino.
