Orange County Prep Baseball : Haack Pitches Huntington Beach to 2-0 Victory Over Irvine

Left-hander Jeff Haack threw a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, as Huntington Beach High School’s baseball team beat Irvine, 2-0, in a nonleague game at Irvine Monday.

The Oilers’ Greg Chizek had two doubles. Sean Fraley and Andy Lewin each singled and doubled. Mike Moceri had two hits for the Vaqueros (1-2). Rick Smetanka was the losing pitcher.

In other nonleague action Monday:

Laguna Beach 8, San Clemente 5--Coby Naess earned his first win of the season, allowing two hits in four innings for the Artists (1-1). San Clemente (1-2) had a five-run outburst in the sixth inning to make the game close at 7-5. Laguna Beach’s Tommy Trager had two hits and two RBIs, and Gary Scott had a pair of hits and an RBI.

St. Margaret’s 8, Pilgrim 2--Mark Flather went the distance, pitching a five-hitter as the Tartans won their season opener at St. Margaret’s. Shortstop Damian Jones was 3 for 3 with three stolen bases and three RBIs.

In Loara Tournament action:

Newport Harbor 7, Downey 4: The Vikings tied the game, 4-4, in the fifth inning, but the host Sailors came back to earn their first victory of the season in the third round of the consolation bracket. Sailor first baseman Stu Hatch went 2 for 2 including a home run, and he scored twice and drove in four. Mickey Starkey was the winning pitcher.

In the Glendora tournament:

Sonora 18, Eisenhower 5--The Raiders (2-0) combined good hitting and pitching to rout the Eagles (1-1) in the tournament quarterfinals. David Bird (1-0) pitched five innings for the win, striking out 10 and giving up four hits. Sonora shortstop Rob Stuart had a homer, two doubles and three RBIs. The Raiders advance to Wednesday’s semifinal at 2:30 p.m.
