A 16-year-old runner collapsed and died in front of a filled grandstand after completing a 400-meter race in a three-team high school track meet at Berkeley.

Coroner’s deputies said that Kenneth Helman, competing for the junior varsity team from St. Mary’s College High School, apparently died of a heart attack. An autopsy was planned.
