College Baseball : USD Beats San Diego State in 10 Innings

Robbie Rogers’ two-out double to center field scored David Jacas from second base in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday and gave the University of San Diego a 6-5 win over San Diego State in a nonconference game at USD.

Rogers’ hit came off reliever Matt Harr and made a winner of reliever Brian Tharpe (1-0). USD improved to 10-4-1 while SDSU fell to 7-5.

The Aztecs opened a 3-1 lead Wednesday before USD rallied with one run in the seventh and three in the eighth. Jacas drove in the tying run with a single in the eighth and David Rolls followed with a check-swing single to right to give the Toreros the lead.

Trailing 5-3 with two out in the ninth, SDSU came back to tie the game. Deron Johnson homered to bring the Aztecs within a run and, after a single by Bob Angus, Bob Parry lined a double to right scoring pinch-runner Tom LeVasseur.

The Aztecs had a chance to go ahead in the 10th when they put runners at first and third with nobody out. However, Steve Montejano missed a squeeze bunt and the Toreros got out of trouble.

In the bottom of the 10th, Jacas reached on an error and was sacrificed to second. After losing pitcher Rusty Elsberry (1-3) walked Rolls, Rogers lined his game-winning hit.

San Diego State, which had beaten USD, 12-1, last Wednesday, will return to Smith Field Friday night to begin a three-game series against Cal State Los Angeles. USD opens play in the West Coast Athletic Conference at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Malibu against Pepperdine.

United States International 5, Chapman 4--The Panthers (6-11) scored four runs in the ninth but could not defeat the Gulls (4-16) at USIU’s Players’ Field.

With two out, the Panthers’ Brian Flatten singled to score Ron Hubel and took second on an error. Flatten tried to score when the second baseman made a throwing error on the next batter, but was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Bob Esquerra.

Chris Botte hit a solo home run in the seventh and Mark Waters had three RBIs for USIU, which had seven hits.

Mike Poteet (2-4) got the win despite giving up three runs in the ninth. Poteet had a four-hit shutout going into the ninth.
