Orange County Prep Baseball : University (10 Errors) Fumbles Way to 11-7 Loss

Capistrano Valley High School took advantage of 10 University errors Wednesday and rolled to an 11-7 non-league victory at University.

The Cougars (5-1) had nothing but singles, but combined with the 10 errors and eight walks that was more than enough.

Al Contrera, the No. 9 hitter for University (1-1) hit a three-run home run in the second inning. He also had another homer taken away by left fielder Scott Stark.

In other non-league action:

Laguna Beach 5, Dana Hills 4--The Artists scored four times in the second inning at Dana Hills on three hits, two errors and a walk. Ted Savage’s double was the big hit of the inning. Billy Lasher hit a two-run homer for the Dolphins.

Mission Viejo 4, Marina 3--Don Roberson had three hits for the Diablos, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jack Bailey (1-1) pitched a complete game for Mission Viejo, striking out five and walking one.

Bolsa Grande 6, St. John Bosco 4--Winning pitcher Tony Beall (2-1) helped himself by going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a stolen base at St. John Bosco. Mike Valdez went 3 for 3 and Geoff Scott was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Matadors (2-2). The loss was the first in five games for the Braves.

Laguna Hills 4, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Hawk pitcher John Willard (1-1) struck out 12 in five innings at Laguna Hills. Dave Shetland, Jeff Hendrickson and Chris Sheff got two hits for the Hawks. Jay Hawthorne hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Eagles.

Santiago 10, Pacifica 5--Sparked by senior designated hitter Anthony Candales’ grand slam, the Cavaliers scored eight runs in the first inning at Santiago. Trinidad Cisneros (2-0) pitched four innings to gain the win. Randy Caires was 2 for 2 with two RBIs for the Cavaliers (3-0).

Newport Christian 13, Coast Christian 8--Joe Alston pitched a complete game and struck out 12 for the Conquerors at Tewinkle Park in Costa Mesa. He helped himself offensively by going 3 for 3 with a double and triple. He also scored four runs and knocked in two. Both teams are 1-1.

La Habra 6, Brea-Olinda 5--The Highlanders scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a triple and wild pitch at La Habra.

In the El Segundo Tournament:

Edison 9, Westminster 4--In a prelude to Sunset League play, the Chargers’ Jeff Kent had a triple, single and two runs batted in.
