Hospital’s Staff Not Paid, Union Says

About 250 former employees of Lake View Medical Center, which closed earlier this week amid bankruptcy proceedings, did not receive paychecks Friday for their final two weeks of work, a union official said.

Robert Tiernan, spokesman for Local 399 of the Service Employees International Union, said the 135 workers represented by his organization, plus dozens of doctors, nurses and technicians, did not receive checks. Tiernan said he will file a claim for back wages as a preferred creditor next week in bankruptcy court in an attempt to recover the money.

Lake View Medical Center officials did not answer telephone calls Friday. However, Vee Fasciotti, a registered nurse who had worked at the facility, said hospital officials told her Friday that checks may be issued next week as the hospital begins to liquidate its assets.

The hospital, which has served the Lake View Terrace area since 1960, closed Monday. Debts of $10 million and increasing competition from other hospitals were blamed for its closure.
