SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Fullerton Falls to Moorpark, 3-2

Jena Verhey singled in Jill McCauley for the winning run in the top of the sixth inning Friday, as Moorpark College defeated top-ranked Fullerton, 3-2, in women’s softball.

Jill McCauley (4-2) pitched her sixth complete game of the season while picking up the win for the Raiders. She was also 2 for 4 in hitting. Teammate Rhonda Nasalroad singled in two runs in the fifth.

Moorpark is 7-4. Fullerton (6-1) was the No. 1 ranked junior college team in the state before the game.

High School Baseball

Alemany 5, Norwalk 2; Alemany 1, Norwalk 0--Sophomore Brian Rosselli pitched the win in the first game for Alemany (4-2).

The Indians’ Darrell Zavatsky hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

In the second game, Chris Mouzis’ singled in the winning run in the third inning.

Faith Baptist 11, Queen of Angels 4--Steve Weston doubled home two runs in the first to spark a six-run inning for Faith Baptist in a non-league game.

Royal 6, Calabasas 0--Dan Presta threw a four-hit shutout at Calabasas, striking out five and walking one for the Highlanders (2-3).

Second baseman Chris Davis, shortstop Sean Sullivan and third baseman J.P. Hardy each contributed two hits to the Royal offense. Designated hitter Dave Raper was 1 for 3 with a two-run home run.

Burroughs (B) 8, Saugus 3--Senior Tom Ruffner threw a nine- strikeout, complete game victory in the third place game of the La Canada tournament.

The Indians stole a school record 13 bases. Sophomore E.J. Pape was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and a stolen base. Junior Mike Bruse was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

The Indians are 4-1.

Westlake 11, Daniel Murphy 1--The Warriors pounded out 13 hits, but it was their defense that inspired the victory at Westlake. The Warriors (3-2) turned two double plays and a triple play to stifle the Nobles’ offense.

Westlake’s John Rowedder was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Bob Grandpre had a three-run triple in the first inning.

Chaminade 11, Trabuco Hills 1--Peter Dunn got the win for Chaminade, working six innings before the nonleague contest was called because of darkness. Dunn (2-0) threw a one-hitter, striking out six.

Denny Vigo went 3 for 4 including a home run to add to the Eagles 13 hits.

Fillmore 8, L.A. Baptist 4--The Flashes scored five runs in the third inning while rolling to an easy win at home.

L.A. Baptist had six errors.

Freshman Casey Burril and juniors Troy Lawrence and Mike MacDonald led the Knights’ offense with two hits apiece. MacDonald had two RBIs.

Fillmore is 2-1. L.A. Baptist is 1-1.

Santa Paula 5, Oak Park 2--The Cardinals scored all five of their runs in the seventh inning for the come-from-behind victory at Oak Park.

High School Softball

Campbell Hall 23, Beverly Hills 5--Tracy Murray was 3 for 5, including a double and two singles, and had five RBIs as the Vikings recorded their third straight victory.

Pitcher Heather Edmonson, who picked up the win, was 4 for 4. Cherise Smith singled, doubled and homered, driving in three runs and scoring three for Campbell Hall.

Montclair Prep 13, Moorpark 11--The Lady Musketeers recorded 20 hits in the nonleague loss at home.

Sophomore Denise Duarte led the Moorpark offense, going 5 for 5 with a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. Shannon Clark was 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

Montclair Prep is 4-1. Moorpark is 2-1.

Boys High School Track

Sylmar 76, Verdugo Hills 49--Huberto Quintana led the Spartans to victory in the East Valley League opener.

Quintana won the mile in 4:42.70, the two mile in 10:18.45 and ran a leg on the winning mile relay team. Teammate Shawn Hampton won the 100 meters in 11.97 and finished second in the 400 meters in 54.70.

Girls High School Track

Verdugo Hills 71, Sylmar 37--Michelette Davis won two events for the Lady Spartans, jumping 4-0 in the high jump and putting the shot 33-7.

Cathedral 65, Harvard 57--The Saracens’ record dropped to 1-2 with the loss at Harvard.

Bob Glass was a double winner for the Saracens, winning the 100 meters in 11.8 and the 200 in 25.3. Teammate Jared Strote won the pole vault at 11-0.

Boys High School Volleyball

Harvard def. Centennial, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0--Mike Lowe and Bill Keck led the Saracens to the win in an Ocean League match.
