Share

Two San Fernando Valley men were rescued from their stranded truck Monday night after it got stuck in a snowdrift on a narrow road in Angeles National Forest during a prospecting trip, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

William Smilde, 33, of Arleta and Charles E. McDonald, 38, of Sun Valley called for help on a citizens band radio inside the four-wheel-drive vehicle, Sgt. Santo Marino said. Edwards Air Force Base heard the call about 6 p.m. and called the Crescenta Valley sheriff’s substation.

The Montrose Search and Rescue Team found the two men outside the vehicle about 12:30 a.m. on the Santa Clara Truck Trail north of Sylmar, Marino said. Neither required medical attention, he said.

The men were on their way to Arleta after spending the day looking for gold in the Palmdale area, Marino said.
