SDSU Goes Distance to Sweep USIU

San Diego State probably traveled farther than it ever will to beat United States International University Thursday.

Because of rain in San Diego, the Aztecs beat the Gulls in a doubleheader at the Padres’ training complex in Yuma, Ariz., 9-1 and 9-4.

“We’ve already been rained out of 10 games,” said Jim Dietz, SDSU coach. “That’s probably an all-time record for us. It’s strange to have to escape San Diego to play a baseball game. We may have to do the same thing against Long Beach State on Saturday,”

The Aztecs (10-5) had 16 hits in the first game. Deron Johnson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Scott Middaugh and Steve Montejano each had two hits.

SDSU’s Casey McKeon was 3 for 4 and Dick Reisgo went 2 for 2 in the second game. Steve Hill, Eric Reynolds and Dan Lopes each had two hits for the Aztecs, who had 14.
