Week in Review : COUNTYWIDE : Surcharge Imposed for Call Boxes on Freeways

Share

Commissioners also voted to create a new county agency that will raise money to install between 500 and 800 emergency call boxes along Orange County’s 135 miles of freeway.

The resulting tax will be in place long before the call boxes. The new agency--the Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies, which is governed by transportation commissioners--immediately assessed a $1-per-vehicle surcharge, which will be paid by Orange County motorists when they register their cars, beginning May 1.

The surcharge is expected to raise about $902,000 this year and $1.6 million in subsequent years.

Installation of the call boxes is expected to begin by April, 1987.
