Orange County Prep Baseball Roundup : Haack Gives Up Only One Hit as Huntington Beach Beats Marina, 7-1

Jeff Haack threw a one-hitter, striking out 12 and walking four as Huntington Beach High School beat Marina, 7-1, Saturday in a Sunset League opener for both schools at Marina.

The only hit off of Haack (3-0) came in the fifth inning, when the Vikings’ Robert Cross singled sharply to left.

Kenny Rehling paced the Oilers, going 2 for 2 with three runs scored.

Huntington Beach is 1-0 in league, 6-3 overall. Marina is 0-1 and 4-4.

In Angelus League play:

St. Paul 4, Mater Dei 0--David Carney hit a three-run homer in the third inning to power the Swordsmen at Mater Dei. St. Paul (1-0, 5-1) is at Servite Wednesday. Mater Dei (0-1, 3-2) plays host to Bishop Amat Wednesday.

Servite 7, Bishop Montgomery 5--Brian Criss hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to break a 5-5 tie at Servite. Servite is 1-0 in league, 3-3 overall. Bishop Montgomery is 0-1 and 2-3.

In the El Segundo tournament:

Westminster 5, Artesia 4--The Lions clinched third place in the tournament with a come-from-behind victory at Westminster. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Westminster rallied for two runs. David Turner (1-0) won in relief.

In nonleague play:

Laguna Hills 7-14, Saddleback 4-11--Alan Short won both games in relief for the Hawks (6-4). Laguna Hills broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning of the opener with five straight hits, the key hit a bases-loaded double by Chris Sheff. In the second game, Laguna Hills took an early 13-3 lead and then hung on for the win.

Santa Ana 12-7, Kennedy 0-1--Jaime Franco and Brian Flores provided the power as the Saints swept the Fighting Irish at Santa Ana. In the first game, Franco went 4 for 5 to help pitcher Ray Lopez (1-0). In the second game, Flores went 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Los Alamitos 10-1, El Toro 7-11--Matt Treece hit a three-run homer for the Griffins in the bottom of the 10th inning to give them the opening game of a doubleheader at Los Alamitos. In the second game, El Toro (4-6) scored 11 runs on six hits before the contest was called after five innings because of rain.

Dana Hills 13-9, Corona del Mar 2-0--Bill Lasher collected six hits to help the Dolphins sweep a doubleheader at Dana Hills. In the first game, Lasher went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. In the second game, he went 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

Fountain Valley 5-11, Capistrano Valley 0-9--The Barons never trailed in either game at Fountain Valley. Scott Decour went 3 for 3 with two RBIs in the first-game win. Fountain Valley (6-2-1) had 15 hits in the second game, which was called after six innings because of rain.

Mission Viejo 3-4, Villa Park 0-2--The Diablos swept a doubleheader from the Spartans at Villa Park. The Spartans are 2-7.

Orange Lutheran 3, LA Lutheran 1--The Lancers managed only two hits but used them effectively at Burbank. Jeff Ward singled in the winning run in the first inning for the Lancers.

Los Amigos 3, Pacific 2--The Lobos won for the first time this season when Alex Ortega squeezed home Ken Hasen with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Hansen singled in the Lobos’ other two runs in the fourth. Pacifica is 3-3.

Capistrano Valley Christian 4, San Clemente 0--Dave Wyckoff pitched the first four innings and James Padilla went the final three for the save as the Eagles (1-2) beat the Tritons (2-2).

Cypress 12-9, Orange 6-0--Ron Brown powered the Centurions to the sweep at Orange by hitting two home runs in the first game and pitching the victory in the second. In the first game, Brown hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third.
