CABLE TV ASSN. CONFERS AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Cable TV systems in Fullerton, Long Beach and Santa Ana were among the winners of Awards for Cable Excellence (ACE) handed out Monday night during the National Cable Television Assn. convention here.

In the children’s programming category, the show “Write On,” about the problems of gang-related graffiti, earned an ACE for Group W in Santa Ana.

Group W’s Fullerton system pulled in two ACEs. “The Great American Race 1985” won in the about sports category, and “After Hours,” featuring new young comedy talent, won in the comedy/variety contest.

“City Alive,” from University TV, based at California State University Long Beach, was named for the best community events coverage.

Elsewhere in Southern California, Cox Cable Communications in Santa Barbara earned three ACEs, in the areas of sports coverage, TV commercials and education.

ACEs, which have been awarded since 1979 by the National Cable Television Assn., this year went to 14 cable operators in 19 communities for their local coverage.

Other winners, selected from 106 nominees included:

--Manhattan Cable Television, New York, for “Still Growing After All These Years,” a documentary on older New Yorkers.

--Oceanic Cablevision, Honolulu, for “Its Never Too Late To Learn,” a docu-drama on illiteracy.

--Cablevision of Connecticut, Westport, Conn., for its nightly newscast for southwestern Connecticut.

--Cablevision of Long Island, Woodbury, N.Y., for its coverage of Long Island sports.

--Cablevision of Baton Rouge, La., for statewide distribution of Louisiana State University basketball.

--Cox Cable Cranston-Johnston, Inc., Cranston, R.I., for a student-produced show on alcoholism in the family.

--Cox Cable New Orleans for spotlighting local musicians.

--Adams-Russell Cable Services, Norwood, Mass., for a series of short subjects designed to hold viewer interest during breaks in a live auction for Muscular Dystrophy.

--UA-Columbia Cablevision, Taunton, Mass., for an original drama on rape. The program was created by a community effort.

--Viacom Cablevision of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, for a show featuring children talking to children on subjects of interest to children.
