San Diego College Baseball : USIU Finally Gets Some Hits at Home, Wins

Players’ Field at United States International University is known as a hitter’s park. Unfortunately for USIU, the visiting teams had been doing most of the hitting.

But Tuesday afternoon the Gulls hit five home runs en route to a 14-11 win over Azusa-Pacific. Before Tuesday’s game, 26 home runs had been hit in nine games at USIU--18 by USIU’s opponents.

Tuesday, Steve Hendricks hit two homers, including a solo shot in the second for USIU (6-19). He hit a three-run homer in the third to make it 5-0.

Greg May hit a grand slam to highlight an eight-run fifth inning. Joe Canales and Brian Finan added solo homers.

Rich Scheevel hit a bases-empty homer in the fifth for Azusa-Pacific (3-12-1). Trailing, 14-5, after seven innings, Azusa-Pacific rallied for six runs in the top of the eighth. The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.

In other games:

Washington State 12, San Diego State 4--The Cougars took advantage of three San Diego State errors in the second inning to score seven unearned runs on three hits at the Best of the West tournament at Fresno State.

SDSU committed five errors in the game, which was stopped after eight innings because of a tournament time limit.

Washington State’s Bill Cruikshank was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Steve Allen (2-1) went the distance for the Huskies (8-4). SDSU is 11-6.
