College Baseball : Eccles Powers Cal State Fullerton to an Easy Victory

John Eccles went 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs Tuesday to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 12-4 win over Stetson in the Best of the West tournament at Fresno State.

Mike Harkey, a sophomore right-hander, allowed eight hits and struck out five in seven innings to earn the win. The Titans (16-8) scored nine runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-2 lead.

Mark Razook added two hits and two RBIs for Fullerton, which plays Brigham Young University today.

In other college action:

Christ College Irvine 22, Pacific Coast Baptist 6--Dennis Mifflin hit three home runs and had four RBIs and Jan Novak hit a grand slam to lead CCI in a Western Christian Athletic Assn. game at San Dimas. Fred Hartman allowed one hit and struck out eight in five innings to earn the win.

In community college action:

Rancho Santiago 7, Cypress 6--Dave Kirkpatrick doubled home Reuben Gonzalez in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Dons in a South Coast Conference game at Rancho Santiago College.

Gonzalez also had a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Steve Scarsone added a solo homer in the sixth for the Dons (4-1 conference, 10-3 overall). Rancho Santiago had a 6-1 lead entering the top of the ninth, but the Chargers scored five unearned runs on one hit, three Don errors and two walks to tie it, 6-6.

Fullerton 13, Golden West 4--Phil Diplock went 4 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored for the Hornets in a South Coast Conference game at Golden West College.

Jeff Oberdank added four hits, including two doubles, and four runs, and Anthony Moreno had two triples and five RBIs, for Fullerton (2-4 in conference and 6-8 overall). Golden West also is 2-4 and 6-8.

Orange Coast 33, Compton 7--Joey James went 4 for 6 with a home run and eight RBIs to lead the Pirates in a South Coast Conference game at Jackie Robinson Park in Compton.

Rex Peters added four hits, including a homer, and three RBIs. Rob Gibbs had three hits, a home run and four RBIs, and Ralph Ramirez had two hits, a homer and four RBIs for Orange Coast (4-0 in conference and 12-4 overall).
