COLLEGE SPRING HIGHLIGHTS

Pierce 6, Long Beach 4--Fred Riscen struck out 13 and completed his fifth game in five starts as the Brahmas remained undefeated in the Metropolitan Conference.

Pierce (6-2, 3-0) scored twice in the top of the eighth to take a 6-2 lead as Mike Rosenberg and Ross Hersh each bunted in a run. Long Beach (4-6, 3-1) rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Mike McCarthy singled and Don Sparks tripled him home. Sparks then scored on an error by Rosenberg, his third of the game.

Riscen (4-1) struck out Tony Deedz for the last out of the game. Riscen, a freshman left-hander from Granada Hills High, walked five and hit two batters, but constantly worked out of trouble, stranding eight Long Beach runners in the last four innings.

Valley 6, Antelope Valley 2--Dave Serpa led Valley to its first Mountain Valley Conference win at home.

Serpa, a sophomore, was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Teammates Mark Gieseke and Mark Glennie contributed two hits each.

Drew Ricker (4-1) threw his first complete game of the year, striking out eight and allowing only one earned run. Valley is 10-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Antelope Valley is 1-8 and 0-2.

Canyons 10, West Los Angeles 0--Victor Satelo led the Cougars to its fifth straight victory in the Mountain Valley Conference game at West Los Angeles.

Satelo, a freshman, was 4 for 4 with a home run. Donny Erickson and Scott Drury added a pair of home runs. Frank Halcovich improved his record to 4-0 by striking out two while giving up six hits in seven innings.

The Cougars are 2-0 in conference and 11-2 overall. West Los Angeles is 2-1 in conference.

Softball

CSUN 4, Mankato (Minn.) State 0; CSUN 1, Mankato State 0--In the opener, the Lady Matadors, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, scored all four runs in the first inning. Kathy Slaten, 5-2, pitched five innings. She struck out five.

Delanee Anderson, 6-1, pitched the second game for Northridge, extending her streak of consecutive innings without an earned run to 50. With runners on second and third in the eighth inning, CSUN’s Kelly Winn singled to drive in the winning run.

Northridge, 15-5, faces Oklahoma, a Division I team, today at 1:00 p.m.
