Caltech President Marvin L. Goldberger, a 63-year-old physicist who has headed the university since 1978, has announced that he will retire by June, 1988. The announcement is in accordance with a university policy that requires faculty and administrators to retire by the end of the academic year after their 65th birthday.

“I have no plans for my retirement and no plans for the two years up to the time of retirement,” Goldberger said. Before he joined Caltech, Goldberger was a professor of physics at Princeton University for 21 years, including six years as chairman of the physics department.

The search for a new Caltech president will be conducted by the university’s trustees, who have not yet begun a campaign to find a replacement.
