NBA Roundup : Spurs End Losing Streak, 115-112

San Antonio’s six-game losing streak came to a dramatic halt Wednesday night when Alvin Robertson scored the last of his 27 points on a game-clinching dunk with three seconds left to give the Spurs a 115-112 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at San Antonio.

Dominique Wilkins had hit a turnaround jump shot with 12 seconds remaining, giving him a game-high 38 points and putting Atlanta on top, 112-111. Robertson took a pass from Wes Matthews and drove the right baseline for the decisive dunk. Matthews then hit two free throws with no time left.

David Greenwood added 27 points for the Spurs, and Mike Mitchell scored 23.

The Hawks got 23 points from guard Randy Wittman, and Kevin Willis added 16.

Denver 114, Detroit 98--NBA scoring leader Alex English had 35 points and sparked a Denver surge that turned back Detroit’s final rally as the Nuggets clinched a playoff berth at Denver.

Detroit, which has already clinched a playoff spot in the East, lost its third consecutive game. However, the Pistons made a game of it for a while despite getting only six points from star guard Isiah Thomas. They trailed by 15 points after three quarters, but outscored the Nuggets 11-4 to close to 92-84 with 8:18 to go.

Then English went to work, scoring six points in a 34-second span to help Denver extend its advantage to 102-84 with 6:02 to play, a lead that Detroit was unable to threaten.

Phoenix 108, Sacramento 104--Walter Davis scored 18 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Suns rallied to defeat the Kings at Phoenix. The Suns moved within three games of Sacramento in the race for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth.

With the score tied at 95-95 with 4:14 left, Phoenix rookie Ed Pinckney hit a free throw with 3:36 to go, and Mike Sanders scored on a layin 28 seconds later that put Phoenix ahead to stay, 98-95.

Davis put the Suns ahead by four points four different times, and, when Reggie Theus hit a layup with eight seconds left to cut the Kings’ deficit to 106-104, Davis sank two free throws with no time left to close out the scoring.

Philadelphia 118, Chicago 112--Julius Erving scored a season-high 29 points and made a key steal and slam dunk in the final minute as the 76ers defeated Bulls at Philadelphia.

Moses Malone also scored 29 points and Maurice Cheeks added 20 points and 13 assists to help the 76ers win their sixth game in seven starts.

The Bulls had rallied to cut the deficit to 111-108 on a tap by Michael Jordan with 1:18 left. But Erving then stole an inbound pass intended for George Gervin under the Bulls’ basket and raced the length of the court.

Boston 127, Indiana 108--It was another record night in Boston Garden as the Celtics set a club mark with their 22nd consecutive home victory.

Indiana, trying to overtake Cleveland for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff berth, had its three-game winning streak snapped and trails the Cavaliers by a game.

Robert Parish was the force behind the Celtic win as he scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. The Celtics surpassed the mark set in 1980-81. It was broken by the Pacers on March 13, 1981.
