Three freshmen led the UCLA tennis team as the Bruins edged USC, 5-4, in a Pacific 10 Southern Division match Saturday before 1,200 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA.

First-year players Tim Trigueiro, Buff Farrow and Dan Nahirny figured in every Bruin victory. Each won a singles match, while Trigueiro combined with Farrow and Nahirny combined with Michael Kures for victories in doubles play.

USC’s Rick Leach, the nation’s top-ranked singles player, defeated Brad Pearce in singles and combined with Tim Pawsat to defeat Pearce and Ken Diller in doubles play.

USC was without its No. 2-ranked singles player, Jorge Lozano, who was suspended earlier in the week because he skipped the UCLA match to play in a tournament. UCLA is 17-1 overall, 5-0 in the Southern Division, while USC drops to 14-3 and 3-1.
