Joe Barry Carroll sank a 21-foot jump shot as time expired Sunday to give the Golden State Warriors a 113-111 victory over the Denver Nuggets at Oakland.

The defeat dropped Denver 1 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the Midwest Division.

The Warriors, who trailed by 13 at the outset of the final quarter, outscored Denver, 26-10, for a 111-108 lead on a free throw by Sleepy Floyd with 14 seconds left.

Denver’s Bill Hanzlik missed a three-point attempt with six seconds to play, but the ball bounced to Mike Evans. He jumped back over the three-point line and made a shot to tie the score with one second remaining.

Golden State called a timeout to set up a play, and Carroll made the winning shot from the right side after getting the inbounds pass from Greg Ballard, who threw the ball in from midcourt.

Carroll scored 31 points, 29 of them in the first three quarters.

Golden State’s Purvis Short, the league’s fourth-leading scorer, played only 9 1/2 minutes before suffering a foot injury and leaving the game. He scored six points, breaking a streak of 191 consecutive games in double figures.

Doctors said he is expected to miss four games because of the injury to the right foot. It was feared he had a stress fracture, but preliminary X-rays were negative.

Denver’s Alex English, the NBA’s leading scorer, scored 34 points, reaching 30 for the 40th time this season.

Larry Smith had a season-high 23 rebounds for Golden State.

The Nuggets are 11-24 away from home. “We choke on the road, let’s face it,” Coach Doug Moe said.

Seattle 107, San Antonio 104--Ricky Sobers scored 15 of his 17 points in the final period, including a breakaway layup with 29 seconds left, and the SuperSonics knocked off the Spurs at San Antonio.

Seattle had lost 10 of its last 11 games on the road.

Wes Matthews scored nine of his career-high 29 points in the final quarter to keep the Spurs in the game. But he missed two long- range jump shots and a layup in the last minute when the Spurs trailed by only two points.

Portland 112, Sacramento 102--Clyde Drexler hit 14-of-19 field-goal attempts for 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 9 assists as the Trail Blazers won at Portland.

Portland shot 61% during the second quarter, rallying from a 27-24 first-quarter deficit to a 57-47 halftime advantage. The Kings, led by Mike Woodson, who scored a season-high 39 points, closed to within 66-61 with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter, but Kiki Vandeweghe scored eight points to help the Trail Blazers outscore the Kings 24-14 during the next seven minutes.
