Bell Gardens : Redevelopment Purchases

The City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, Monday authorized the purchase of additional property in the Central City Project Area near Florence and Eastern avenues.

The acquisitions are the latest in a plan by the city to eventually acquire all of the property from Eastern Avenue to the Long Beach Freeway, and from Live Oak to Priory streets, for a city parking lot and other commercial developments, said Claude Booker, city manager.

The city authorized $174,886 for the purchase of property at 7531-37 Eastern Ave., and three lots at 7527, 7531 and 7523-25 Hornsey Ave. for $301,500. The Hornsey properties will be purchased from George Hardie, manager and general partner of the Bicycle Club, who originally bought it for casino parking.

Booker said the casino, now renting 1 1/2 acres from the city for parking, will need up to five more acres for parking.

The agency still needs to acquire 29 more parcels in the designated area, Booker said.
