“In all my years in baseball,” said Manager John McNamara of the Boston Red Sox, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that--in spring training or in the regular season.”

The Red Sox went on an offensive binge that buried the Chicago White Sox, 27-10, Wednesday in an exhibition game before 5,190 fans at Sarasota, Fla.

The 27 runs were the second most ever scored by the Red Sox in any game. The team’s record was set in a 29-4 trouncing of the old St. Louis Browns in Boston on June 8, 1950.

“Something like this is hard to believe,” McNamara said as he looked at the box score of the rout after the team’s early-evening return from the 3-hour 18-minute marathon.

“Just imagine: 37 runs, 39 hits, 16 walks, 4 wild pitches, all in one game,” McNamara said. “The way we were scoring runs I didn’t think it would ever end.”

The Red Sox batted around in four innings, sent eight batters to the plate in another and seven in another.

Glenn Hoffman, Marty Barrett and John Christensen led the Boston attack with three hits apiece. Hoffman drove in six runs with a double and two singles. Barrett had consecutive triples and a single, with four RBIs. Christensen had a double and two singles, drove in three runs and scored five.
