Villa Park : Deadly Crossing Has No New Serious Accidents

Share

No serious accidents have taken place in the two months since the City Council approved safety measures for a dangerous intersection at which two students had been killed, City Manager Carolyn Veregge said Thursday.

The students, Jeff Dagley, 13, and Mitchell Soper, 12, both students at Cerro Villa Junior High School, died from injuries suffered when cars struck them in the crosswalk at the intersection of Taft and Nichols avenues near the front entrance of Villa Park High School. Three other schools are nearby.

The City Council, after pressure from parents, on Jan. 21 agreed to install stop signs and street lights at the crosswalk. The city also posted a uniformed crossing guard at the intersection.

Veregge said the city hoped to receive state money to pay half the installation costs of a traffic signal at the intersection. The signal will cost about $80,000.
