OH, OSCAR

Beth Ann Krier’s fine article (“The Rewards of the Awards,” March 23) prompts me to ask: What was that wondrous thing Bette Midler did when she was a presenter at the 1982 Oscar show?
I read about it, not what happened.
Nobody I asked knew, and we’ve been consumed with curiosity.
Since Krier refers to Midler and Jack Nicholson, and since this is such a gracious section of The Times, could you find in your hearts to give us a few enlightening sentences?

She did a rare and wonderful Oscar thing. She made everyone laugh. Many times.
