Former race car driver John Paul Sr. pleaded innocent at St. Augustine, Fla., to charges that he tried to murder a federal drug witness.

Circuit Judge Richard Weinberg refused to set bond for Paul, 46, who was flown Thursday night from Switzerland to be tried on charges he shot federal drug witness Stephen Carson five times on a Crescent Beach, Fla., boat ramp in 1983.

Paul was originally to be tried for attempted murder in December, 1983, but he failed to show and forfeited a $500,000 bond. St. Johns County authorities and a U.S. Marshal flew to Zurich to take custody of Paul, who was arrested in Lausanne, Switzerland, in January, 1985 on a U.S. extradition warrant.
