Air Station at El Toro Again Declared No. 1 Marine Base

The Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro has been honored for the second time in two years as the nation’s top Marine base, a military spokeswoman announced Tuesday.

The base received the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence, an award created by President Reagan in 1985 “to recognize the outstanding efforts of the people who operate and maintain our military installations,” said Staff Sgt. Vicki Conkel.

Each year, one base in each branch of the armed services receives an award for installation excellence. Other winners this year were Ft. Leonard Wood, a Missouri Army base; the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, and Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
