SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Northridge Isn’t Dull in Sweep at Riverside

Share

As far as Cal State Northridge softball Coach Gary Torgeson is concerned, the road to Riverside is like the road to nowhere.

“It’s like going to Dullsville,” Torgeson said before Tuesday’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader. “There’s no atmosphere here. We have to create our own excitement.”

The Lady Matadors, who were playing on the road for the first time since March 1, got plenty of thrills and record-breaking performances from center fielder Barbara Jordan and left fielder Beth Onestinghel as CSUN swept Riverside, 3-0 and 2-0.

Jordan, batting .408, broke her own record for runs scored in a season (35) by scoring twice in the doubleheader. The All-American from Granada Hills High has 37 this season.

Onestinghel came into the doubleheader batting .336 with 21 runs batted in--three short of the CSUN single-season record. She broke the record by going 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs on the day.

Kathy Slaten (13-4-1) and Delanee Anderson (13-2) both pitched complete games for CSUN (36-8-1, 8-2). Riverside is 13-19, 2-8.
