Balfanz and Mustin Homer Twice as Northridge Splits Doubleheader
John Balfanz and Todd Mustin each homered in both games Saturday as Cal State Northridge split a doubleheader with UC Riverside. The Matadors won the first game, 4-1, and lost the second, 8-7, in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at CSUN.
In the opener, Mustin’s early inning home run set the tone for Northridge, (7-9 in the CCAA, 15-18 overall). Chris Pinsak drove in the game-winning run with a single to right field in the top of the third that scored Mustin.
Jeremy Hernandez (5-4) went the distance and struck out seven with no walks. Balfanz cemented the victory with his eighth-inning home run.
Mustin, who was 2 for 4, hit his solo shot in the seventh. Balfanz sent one out of the park to open the ninth, but with two out Craig Burns hit a long fly to right field that was caught at the wall to end the game.
Riverside is 5-6 in the CCAA and 18-16 overall.
