Mike Moreau’s March 23 article about his experiences using Frommer’s “Europe on $25 a Day” is the kind of travel writing I enjoy. It was a candid, detailed critique that makes us better consumers.

I was one who cut her travel teeth on Frommer’s “$5 a Day” in 1 962. He dared us all to travel “his way,” and enough of us did to create a revolution in travel. However, his guidebooks are not for everyone. For example, I no longer am willing to search hours for a hotel or not find one at all.

As a consultant to independent travelers, it has taken me years of reading guidebooks to begin to evaluate the author’s predilections. Is the definition of clean, charming or comfortable anything like mine? I still read hotel and restaurant descriptions word by word, as Moreau suggests. It’s too bad we don’t have more comparative reviews of travel guides. JULIE ALBERT Claremont
