San Jose Bees Fine, Suspend No-Show Norris

Mike Norris, the former Oakland A’s pitcher, drew a fine and one-week suspension from the San Jose Bees for missing a weekend game.

Norris’ first start for the Class A California League team now is scheduled for next Saturday if he complies with team rules, Harry Steve, the Bees’ president and manager, said Monday. Norris, who was to have pitched on Sunday, was scratched from the start after failing to show up Saturday night.

“I still believe Mike is sincere in wanting to make a comeback,” Steve said after Sunday’s game. “But this latest thing really disappoints me.”

Norris told Steve that he was unable to get a ride to the ballpark in time for Saturday night’s game. The pitcher’s driver’s license was revoked a year ago.

Norris, 31, signed with the Bees as a free agent, hoping to make San Jose the first stop on a comeback trail to the major leagues. Injuries and problems with drugs and alcohol have kept him out of organized baseball most of the last three years.
