Nebraska, and not Arizona State, was the rightful winner of the NCAA men’s gymnastics championship, according to John Scheer, director of the meet earlier this month in Lincoln, Neb.

Scheer, a professor at Nebraska, called the meet “a dark day for gymnastics,” but said that his findings would not change the result. Scheer said that he and assistant director Jeff Johnson interviewed judges and others involved in a controversy that left Nebraska in second place.

In dispute were the scores on Nebraska high-bar performances, which Scheer, a director of four previous NCAA championships, said should have been graded higher because of their degree of difficulty.
