Illinois Suspends Former Pierce All-American
Illinois football player Jeff Markland, a former Pierce College All-America tight end, was suspended for one academic quarter plus summer classes and placed on conduct probation, following a hearing Thursday by the university’s disciplinary committee.
Markland, who along with seven other Illini players was involved in a March 8 disturbance at a campus fraternity house, still faces charges of battery and aggravated battery. The charges were filed by the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in the Champaign County, Ill., Circuit Court.
Markland is already serving punishment handed down by Illinois Coach Mike White. The punishment includes weekend running, community service and loss of spring-break vacation.
Markland, a sophomore who redshirted last season, played at Pierce for two seasons after graduating from Burroughs High in Burbank.
