For Rizzuto, Game Sometimes Seems Secondary
Interested in golf? Restaurants? Anniversaries? Birthdays?
Tune in Phil Rizzuto, who is now in his 30th year as a Yankee broadcaster.
Rizzuto is renowned here for his partisanship and the tangents he often takes.
Sometimes, the game seems secondary.
Don Drysdale, now associated with the Chicago White Sox, recalled working a game with Rizzuto in which he fell behind on his scorecard and glanced at Rizzuto’s to catch up.
“I saw he had ‘W W’ next to a couple of hitters,” Drysdale recalled. “I couldn’t figure what it meant and finally asked him.”
Replied Rizzuto: “Wasn’t watching, wasn’t watching.”
