Pitcher Mike Norris has been dismissed from the San Jose Bees, a Class A minor league team that he and some other players with previous drug problems were hoping to use as a springboard back to the major leagues.

Harry Steve, the Bees’ president and manager, released Norris after the pitcher showed up late at San Jose Municipal Stadium for a California League game with Palm Springs Friday night. Since Norris joined the team on March 7, he missed two practices and a game a week ago.

Norris, 31, had no comment about his dismissal.

“I can’t be a baby-sitter,” said Steve, who also had hired former major leaguers Steve Howe, Ken Reitz and Daryl Sconiers. “People try to help people, but you’ve got to help yourself when it comes right down to it,”
