Police and anti-Nazi protesters clashed with more than 200 right-wing extremists who gathered in this northern town to celebrate Adolf Hitler’s birthday, police said Sunday.

Police arrested 44 of the extremists--called “skinheads” because they generally shave their heads--after the clashes late Saturday and early Sunday. Four anti-Nazi protesters were also arrested for allegedly beating a “skinhead,” police said. Two people were slightly injured.

Police rounded up more than 200 “skinheads” and put them on trains out of town, some under police guard.

The “skinheads” are gangs of mostly young, right-wing extremists who are opposed to foreign workers and left-wing policies.

Hitler was born April 20, 1889, in Braunau, Austria, and committed suicide on April 30, 1945, as his Third Reich collapsed.
