The Chicago Cubs’ pitching staff, riddled with injuries during the 1985 season, got more bad news when relief ace Lee Smith was put on the 15-day disabled list.
Smith, second in the National league with 33 saves last year, was injured during Sunday’s 8-8 suspended tie with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He suffered a pulled groin muscle on a pitch in the 11th inning.
Chicago recalled left-hander Ray Fontenot from its Iowa farm team to replace Smith on the 24-man roster.
