Santa Monica : Asbestos Removal Plan OKd

Share

The City Council has unanimously approved a plan to replace the asbestos ceiling at the city’s main library at 1643 6th St.

The work will cost about $2 million and will be financed from the city’s general fund. The nine-month job is scheduled to begin in September. The library will be closed while the work is under way. The city’s branch libraries, at 2601 Main St. and 2101 Ocean Park Blvd., will be open.

Asbestos, inhalation of which has been linked to cancer, was first discovered in the library in 1983. During the asbestos removal, the city will also perform about $400,000 worth of renovation work on the library.
