Fitzgerald Steals Sweep for Moorpark
Judy Fitzgerald stole six bases Friday in a nonconference doubleheader at Moorpark College to break the school single season and career stolen base records as Moorpark swept two games from Santa Monica, 10-1 and 3-0.
Fitzgerald, who was 2 for 3 in each game, broke the records established last year by Francis Reed, who now attends Cal. Reed had 31 steals a year ago and 51 in her career.
Fitzgerald, a sophomore center fielder from Thousand Oaks High, increased her totals to 32 this season and 52 in a career with Friday’s six stolen bases.
Moorpark scored four unearned runs thanks to five Santa Monica errors in the first game. Moorpark’s Jill McAuley was 3 for 3 and pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits.
Peggy Liebel was 2 for 3 to lead Moorpark in the second game. Jeana Verhey was 1 for 3 with a double. Moorpark pitchers Karen Mead and McAuley combined for the victory, allowing only three Santa Monica hits.
Moorpark is 22-9 overall.
