The Soviet Union won its 20th world hockey championship with a 3-2 victory over Sweden in Moscow.
The Soviets boosted their record to 10-0 by staving off a determined Swedish team, which won the silver medal for the 12th time.
Canada, which had been tied with the Soviets for the most world titles at 19, earned the bronze medal by edging Finland, 4-3. Team Canada was coached by Pat Quinn of the Kings. Tony Tanti of the Vancouver Canucks scored the game-winning goal for Team Canada. Jim Fox and Craig Redmond of the Kings also scored for Team Canada.
