Betty Seaver, mother of Chicago White Sox pitcher Tom Seaver, died Monday in Fresno after a long illness. She was 73.
Seaver had returned to Chicago from a trip to the West Coast to visit his mother when he was told of her death. He immediately returned to Fresno, where he grew up.
Seaver, who has won 306 games with the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and the White Sox, had been the scheduled pitcher for Chicago Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles.
