San Juan Capistrano : Spilled Cans Trigger 3-Hour Freeway ‘Crush’

Share

Drivers on southbound Interstate 5 got a surprise Wednesday morning as 800 cases of a canned soft drink spilled out of a tractor-trailer over four lanes of traffic, California Highway Patrol Information Officer Ken Daily said.

As the truck crossed the Trabuco Creek Bridge about 10 a.m., one of the main supports along the length of the trailer broke, causing almost half of the load--2,000 cases of Orange Crush--to fall out.

The cans, after being run over by oncoming cars, were picked up and hauled off the freeway.

With the county Fire Department, Caltrans and Highway Patrol working to clear the accident, traffic was backed up for about three hours before the mess was cleaned up at about 1 p.m., Daily said.

The driver, Daniel Lawrence Krugle, 27, of El Cajon, was uninjured.
