Tennis Roundup : Gomez Beats Jaite, Advances to U.S. Clay Courts Final

Second-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador defeated fourth-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Clay Courts tennis championships Saturday at Indianapolis to reach the title match for the fourth consecutive year.

Gomez, who lost last year’s final to Ivan Lendl, will play top-seeded Thierry Tulasne of France, who beat No. 3-seeded Jimmy Arias, 7-6, 6-0.

Gomez won the championship in 1984 after losing to Arias the previous year.

In the women’s division, top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany and second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini won their semifinal matches and will meet today in a showdown between two teen-agers.

Graf defeated unseeded Mercedes Paz of Argentina, 6-3, 6-2, to move into her fifth final this year. Graf, 16 and ranked third in the world, carries a 14-match winning streak into the women’s final of the $575,000 tournament.

Sabatini, 15, defeated third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-4, 6-4. Sabatini has lost to Graf in their two previous professional meetings.

Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia and Stefan Edberg of Sweden, the top two seeded players in the Audi tournament at Ede, the Netherlands, won their semifinal matches.

Lendl beat countryman Miloslav Mecir, 7-6, 7-5, after an uphill struggle in which he repeatedly threw down his racket in anger. Lendl trailed, 5-1, in the second set, then won six straight games.

Edberg scored a 7-6, 6-3 victory over unseeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain.

Top-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden defeated third-seeded Andreas Maurer of West Germany, 6-4, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Kent Carlsson of Sweden beat second-seeded Anders Jarryd, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals of the $80,000 Madrid Grand Prix tournament.

In an exhibition match at Nimes, France, Mats Wilander of Sweden beat West Germany’s Boris Becker, 6-4, 6-3.
