‘Arrogance of Power’

Your editorial stated, “Howard Ezell, the Western regional commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, has again overstepped the bounds of propriety, . . . to establish an immigration legislation lobby.”

A very large part of Ezell’s responsibilities deal with law enforcement. This includes alien and drug smuggling as well as interdiction of terrorists attempting to enter our country. “Propriety” does not exist at our borders. Propriety was exterminated years ago. Anarchy is the order of the day.

Ezell was a very successful business man. He would certainly recognize priorities and focus on efficiency. He has done this as a commissioner, both in law enforcement and public relations.

It is extremely unlikely that Ezell either could or would take the time to establish an “immigration legislation lobby.” There are far more fertile grounds for him to plow. That he has done.

One important objective in public relations is to get the word out to the maximum extent possible. To this end, Ezell has appeared on nationally televised programs such as Phil Donahue and other shows. He has frequently been featured on televised newscasts. Additionally, he has made many speeches to civic-minded groups.

America is supposed to be a “nation of laws.” Yet, the City Council of Los Angeles, first adopted, then retreated from the lawless attitude that California’s largest city should become a so-called “Sanctuary” city. That retreat was from the irate citizens of Los Angeles, not, as suggested in the editorial, a retreat from Commissioner Ezell.
