San Diego State’s MacGregor Wins Twice to Advance to NCAA Tennis Quarterfinals

Unseeded Cynthia MacGregor of San Diego State reached the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. individual tennis tournament Tuesday in Austin, Texas.

MacGregor won two matches Tuesday. She defeated Michelle Taylor of Brigham Young, 6-4, 6-1, and then upset No.4-seeded Heliane Steden of USC, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Qualifying for the round of 16 players makes MacGregor an All-America. MacGregor will play unseeded Sheri Norris of Arizona today.

MacGregor, a senior, was the Aztecs’ No. 1 player the last two seasons; freshman Monique Javer became the No.1 player this year.

Javer was seeded seventh for the tournament. She won her first-round match Tuesday, defeating Kathy Vigna of Harvard, 6-0, 6-0. But Javer was upset by Jennifer Prah of Cal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.

In other singles matches, Jill Smoller of Arizona defeated Cathy Berry of SDSU, 6-1, 6-4, and Clemson’s Ingelise Driehuis beat the Aztecs’ Anne Moeller, 6-2, 6-3.

Two United States International University singles players lost in the first round. Rakafet Binyamini lost to Anne Grousbeck of Texas, 6-4, 6-1, and Silvie Tetreault was beaten by Libbie Brende of Oklahoma State, 6-0, 6-1.
