Maywood : No Anti-Cable Piracy Help
A request to help educate Maywood residents about the illegality of pirating cable TV service has been rejected by the City Council.
CommuniCom, a Culver City-based firm that provides cable service in Maywood, asked the council to send a letter to residents explaining the problem and a commitment by both the city and company to eliminate the unauthorized use of cable service. The company also asked the city to educate the public that using cable television service without paying for it is a crime.
The council voted 3-2 last week to not take part in the company’s campaign, said Leonard Locher, city clerk. He said the council felt it was not the city’s “responsibility to help people out of financial binds.”
“We can appreciate their problem, but the majority of the council felt it was their problem to solve,” Locher said.
The company, in a letter to the city, said a recent survey showed that 49% of the subscribers in Maywood are receiving unauthorized service. Locher said there are 6,836 households in the city.
